Adobe Dreamweaver provides HTML editing capabilities widely used for maintaining Internet web pages. The product is one of several commercial and open source products used to develop and maintain Internet content.
Dreamweaver was developed by Macromedia in 1987 but has been owned by Adobe since 2005. The software is part of the Creative Suite system offered by Adobe and works either as a standalone product or in conjunction with other adobe products such as Photoshop.
Users of Adobe Dreamweaver edit HTML files on their own computer before uploading the files to Internet servers. The software supports all common Internet standards and protocols including Cascading Style Sheets, Java and ColdFusion. The software provides displays of the rendered files showing what the HTML will look like when displayed by a web browser.
The software provides audio, animation and video capabilities to the web programmer. Some programmers have used Adobe Dreamweaver in the production of tablet or smart phone apps. The software is considered one of the premier web development packages.
Extensions, usually developed by third-party vendors, offer additional flexibility to Adobe Dreamweaver. Some of these extensions offer specialized functions such as ecommerce not included in the basic product.
Adobe offers the product for both Windows and Apple platforms with support for a wide variety of languages.
Adobe Dreamweaver was upgraded eight times when owned by Macromedia and five times since being acquired by Adobe. As of 2012, the current release is CS6. Dreamweaver is marketed directly by Adobe through its website and is also available from online and other retailers. It is supported by Adobe at its website and by third-party organizations that provide tutorials and training.
